Grendelcomment: Regarding Jewel's "Controversial" Star Spangled Banner . . . . These groaners should chill the fuck out.  Did Roseanne Barr teach you nothing when she went through her national anthem turmoil back in 1990?  Yes this Jewel rendition is unusual, and for purists perhaps off-putting.  But is it heartfelt?  Hell yeah it is - just like Roseanne's was.  Jewel's rendition was presented as being one person's unique take on the classic.  And in this life long musician's opinion, it was very interesting musically.  I found the chord augmentations clever and though sometimes not the ones you'd expect, it still worked nicely with the core melody.   My favorite rendition of the anthem does something similar.  It was by a guy named Hendrix.  Patriotic virtue signalers called Jimi disrespectful back then, too.  Boo.

    Anyway, unlike the vocoder AI-written pop drivel drowning the airwaves these days, Jewel shows some reasonable chops playing an actual musical instrument.  And of course, the chica can really belt it out.  Screw the complainers, Jewel.  I think it was beautiful.

     Now a word to these anthem zealots.  Our military has for more than a century, regularly, promoted adaptations, augmentations and modified arrangements of our forces hymns.  It keeps the old new again, and allows for the lovely merging of patriotic unity and individual expression that is for the USA our most enshrined and protected ethos.  Now . . . do we need some serious reinstatement of standards and convention in our nation across the board in almost every area?  Obviously.  This is a stance where we can heartily agree.  But as this pendulum swings - and yeah lads . . .  it's swinging bigtime so keep heart . . . . the moment you begin thrashing artists who are demonstrating skill and craft, though deviating from rigorous adherence to protocol - particularly in the form of song . . . . . that is the moment you've put on the baddie hat my friend.
